MSI GTX1080TI DUKE 11G OC power system repair

We will begin the repair of the MSI GTX1080TI DUKE 11G OC graphics  card with an inspection. We remove the cooling system and backplate. What immediately catches your eye is a burst coil and an almost burnt out resistor (the current sensor by which the video card measures its own energy consumption).

It is clear that the problem is not in these elements, but in a short circuit somewhere else.

According to the client, the graphics card burned out due to problems with the power supply unit (PSU), and after connecting a new PSU, a burning smell was felt from the video card when turned on.

To start repairing the graphic

  cards we will need a multimeter. Measurements show that the short circuit is in the part of the circuit that supplies 3 phases of the core and 2 memory. Under a microscope, damage to the transistors (MOSFETs) is not noticeable, so we remove all the power mosfets in this part of the circuit and check it with a tester. It turned out that in the upper power phase of the video chip core, both transistors were broken.

These elements turned out to be from a new series and have not been used anywhere before, so you will have to order them and wait a long time. Graphics can be repaired

MSI GTX1080TI DUKE 11G OC cards according to a quick scenario - we will make them work without one phase, and we will take the working mosfets from that part of the circuit so that there is an approximate balance in consumption from 2 12V connectors.

In the MSI GTX1080TI DUKE, 12V power is taken from two 8-pin connectors. One eight-pin connector powers 3 phases for the video chip (one burned out) and 2 for memory, and the other powers 5 for the core. We need a ratio of 3+2 and 4...

This configuration will be fully operational, but it is desirable to reduce consumption by software by 10 percent. Overclocking, of course, is out of the question, but the client will be able to use the card until the parts arrive. And when the mosfets arrive, then we’ll finish it as required according to the scheme.
